July 11-13, 2008:  Shoun-Shown-Shawn family reunion.  Mountain City, TN

Shouns, Showns and Shawns converge on Mountain City for 2008 Reunion

Mountain City, TN knew the Shouns, Showns, and Shawns were in town the weekend of July 11, 12, and 13 when the family gathered for its annual reunion. Several hundred descendants of Leo-nard and Barbara Shoun and their families met to renew old acquaintances from all over the nation and to meet new ones.

The reunion is traditionally held in Mountain City every four years. John and Cathy Brookshire were hosts for this year’s event, which had its headquarters at the Johnson County Welcome Cen-ter.

Among the activities enjoyed by the family were meals at the Roan Creek Elementary School, puz-zle solving, visiting the family cemeteries, and researching the family history at the Johnson County Library. In recent years, the family association has made sizeable donations to the library’s

genealogy room.

A highlight of the reunion was Saturday night’s live auction conducted by John Brookshire, a professional auctioneer, which raised funds for the association.

The reunion concluded with the annual business meeting on Sunday morning.

John Brookshire represented the association at a dedication ceremony Sunday afternoon honoring John Hamilton Shown with the Southern Cross of Honor, presented by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The ceremony was held at Goodwin-Shown Cemetery in Doe Valley.
