From President, Diana Massey (May 2015):

Greetings to each Shawn, Shown and Shoun family member!  I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be part of a family.  Our immediate family may be different from the 60,000 plus folks identified as descendants of our forebears, Barbara and Leonard Shoun, but still basic similarities exist in all groups of relatives.  In an effort to give meaning to this group of “Cousins” we call our Sh—n Family Tree, here are a few quotations that further define family.

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.  -- Jane Howard

Families are like fudge... mostly sweet with a few nuts. -- Author Unknown

Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city. -- George Burns

I know why families were created with all their imperfections. They humanize you. They are made to make you forget yourself occasionally, so that the beautiful balance of life is not destroyed. -- Anais Nin

In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future. -- Alex Haley

No matter what you've done for yourself or for humanity, if you can't look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished? -- Elbert Hubbard

Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family. -- Anthony Brandt

The family is one of nature's masterpieces. -- George Santayana

You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them. -- Desmond Tutu

If you can identify with any of these expressions, you surely are qualified to enjoy your membership in the Shoun Family Association.   I hope you will come to Washington D.C. in July, where many of our extended family Cousins will gather for Reunion 2015.  Meet some of the sweet ones, the nuts, the large number of them from another city, the links to our past and bridges to our future, ones that humanize you, that give beautiful balance to our lives.  Whether it will be your first time or you have attended many other Reunions, you are an important part, a gift to our vast family.  I hope to see you there!
